The Economics of Software as a Service (SaaS)

December 5, 2008

Pragmatic Marketing has released an excellent article comparing the costs of Software as a Service versus Software as a Product.

Check out the article here.

ToolHound Online is our Software as a Service offering where the software licensing, support and hosting are provided for an annual fee. ToolHound Onsite is offered as a product license in the traditional sense.

Dolphin 9900 looks great!

August 12, 2008

We’ve have our Dolphin 9900 for more than a week now and it tests out fine with all our products. So far I must say it is a great replacement for the 9500. The 9900 is pretty much the same size and shape as the 9500 and actually uses the same communication and recharging cradle as the 9500. The screen on the 9900 is a little smaller but the text appears much sharper. The keys have a flat finish that makes them easier to read in bright light.

The devices come with Office Mobile which included Word, Excel, OneNote and Powerpoint, so you can use the scanner for more than just ToolHound. The Messaging software can be used for sending and receiving your email. You can also synchronize your mail, calendar and contacts with your PC.

The new wireless setup software works like a charm and allowed us to easily connect to our wireless network with and without encryption. Once connected we were able to access the internet using the Internet Explorer included on the device.  With the GSM option, you can even use the 9900 as a cell phone or access the internet without a wireless network. Bluetooth comes standard with all units and can be used with wireless headsets and printers.

I think the biggest improvements that will be of benefit to ToolHound users will be the zipper processor that will make the application run noticeably faster and the increase in standard memory that allows larger organization to use batch mode with significantly more employees and inventory items than the 9500.

If you are looking for a new scanner for your crib give our sales department a call at 800-387-8665 and order one of these fantastic Dolphin 9900s.

Gotta love technology

July 17, 2008

I got this little funny from Dave, our VP of Sales.

Our telephone automated attendant has voice-to-text translation when it emails our voice messages to us. Here’s one Dave received:

Yeah David is washing a car with Beckel.

and the actual voice message was:

Yeah David. This is Washington Carr with Bechtel.

Having problems with the date on your batch scanner?

July 15, 2008
Is the date on your batch scanner resetting to January 1, 2003 or 2005 when you do a cold boot? There are a couple of solutions to this. The obvious one is avoid doing a cold boot on your Dolphin. The better solution is to put your Dolphin in the cradle after the cold boot and sync it. However, do not sync it as a guest, use the Synchronization Setup Wizard.

Now, whenever you put the scanner in the cradle the date will be automatically updated to your computer’s date.

P.S. This is not an issue with wireless scanners in ToolHound Onsite or ToolHound Desktop as the date is automatically updated.
